Congress to field wife of Santokh Singh Chaudhary for Jalandhar Lok Sabha by-election

CHANDIGARH: The Congress party has announced the name of Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary wife of late Santokh Singh Chaudhary MP from Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat for the by-election to be held after the death of Chaudhary Santokh Singh.

Chandhary Santokh Singh had died of cardiac arrest during the Bharat Jodo Yatra by Rahul Gandhi on January 14, 2023. The Election Commission is yet to announce the schedule of election.

Karamjit’s candidature was approved by All India Congress Committee president Mallikarjun Kharge. She served as a professor in higher education department for more than three decades and retired as Director of Public Instructions (Colleges).

She thanked the party high command and said that she would work to fulfill the incomplete tasks of her husband. PPCC president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring also congratulated Karamjit Kaur chaudhary for her candidature.

Vikaramjit Singh Chaudhary son of Santokh Singh Chaudhary is Congress MLA from Phillaur reserve constituency.

In 2019, Chaudhary was polled 3, 85, 712 votes, while SAD candidate Charanjit Singh Atwal 3, 66, 221 votes. The AAP candidate Justice Zora Singh (retd) was polled mere 25, 467 votes, while BSP candidate Balwinder Singh got 2, 04, 783 votes.
