Guru Nanak Dev University Hosts Staging of Play ‘Begampure Da Vaasi’
AMRiTSAR: Guru Nanak Dev University organized a special theatrical performance of the play ‘Begampure Da Vaasi’ at the Golden Jubilee Convention Centre under a series of events dedicated to the 650th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Ravidas Ji. The programme was organized by the School of Punjabi Studies under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Karamjeet Singh. Eminent theatre personality Sh. Kewal Dhaliwal was the writer and director of the play.
Addressing the audience on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Karamjeet Singh said that the concept of “Begampura” envisioned by Sri Guru Ravidas Ji was based on equality, harmony and universal brotherhood. He emphasized that there is a strong need in contemporary times to understand the relevance of Guru Ravidas Ji’s teachings and philosophy.
Providing details about the programme, Head of the School of Punjabi Studies, Dr. Manjinder Singh said that the play effectively communicated the teachings of Sri Guru Ravidas Ji related to social equality and justice among students and society at large. The entire programme was presided over by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Karamjeet Singh.
On the occasion, Dean, Academic Affairs, Prof. Harinder Singh Saini, Registrar Prof. K.S. Chahal, Sh. Kewal Dhaliwal, Dr. Palwinder Singh and Dr. Satpal Sokhi were also honoured.
The play ‘Begampure Da Vaasi’ was based on the life philosophy and humanistic ideology of the great revolutionary saint Sri Guru Ravidas Ji. The central message of the play focused on eliminating social evils, such as caste discrimination, inequality and untouchability from society. The powerful performances by the artists captivated the audience throughout the presentation.
A special stage setup, recreating the atmosphere of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, added authenticity to the performance. The subtle and expressive use of lighting beautifully enhanced the dramatic mood of every scene, while the costumes reflected the historical and social background of that era. The rendition of sacred hymns from Guru Ravidas Ji’s bani created a deeply spiritual and respectful atmosphere during the performance.
The lead actor portrayed the calm, determined and humanistic personality of Guru Ravidas Ji with remarkable effectiveness. The play also highlighted the ideological triumph of Guru Ravidas Ji over the arrogance of the contemporary rulers and priestly class. More than merely a religious presentation, the play emerged as a powerful document of human rights and social justice.
The auditorium witnessed an overwhelming response and emotional engagement from the audience. Through the director’s artistic vision, the play successfully connected historical realities with present-day social concerns and inspired a sense of dignity and awareness among marginalized sections of society.
