PANCHKULA: In a dramatic turn of events, the Haryana Police have booked former Punjab Director General of Police Mohammad Mustafa, his wife Razia Sultana, a former minister, and their daughter in connection with the alleged murder of their son, Akil Akhter, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Panchkula last week.
According to officials, an FIR has been registered at the Sector 5 police station under Sections 103(1) and 61 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), pertaining to murder and criminal conspiracy.
The case was lodged based on a complaint by a man named Shamshuddin, who alleged that Akhter’s death was not natural but occurred under “suspicious circumstances.”
DCP Panchkula Srishti Gupta said that on October 16, police were informed that Akhter, 35, a resident of Sector 4, MDC, Panchkula, had been found dead at his home. The family had informed the police, and after initial inquiry, no foul play was suspected. The body was released to the family after a post-mortem examination.
However, police reopened the case after videos and social media posts surfaced, purportedly recorded by Akhter before his death, in which he allegedly expressed fears for his life and mentioned family disputes.
“These materials prompted a deeper investigation, leading to the registration of a case against the family members, ” the DCP said.
Mustafa, a 1985-batch IPS officer, is a former Punjab DGP (Law and Order) and was known for his close association with the Congress party. His wife, Razia Sultana, served as a minister in the previous Congress government led by Captain Amarinder Singh.
Police said the investigation is underway and statements from the accused and witnesses will be recorded soon.
