DLSA Chairperson Conducts Surprise Inspection of Amritsar Central Jail
AMRITSAR: District and Sessions Judge-cum-Chairperson of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Amritsar, Jatinder Kaur, on Thursday conducted a surprise inspection of the Central Jail, Amritsar, to review the welfare, healthcare and living conditions of inmates and ensure that their legal rights are being protected.
She was accompanied by Amardeep Singh Bains, Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Secretary, DLSA, Amritsar.
The judicial officers inspected various sections of the jail in the presence of Jail Superintendent Rajiv Kumar Arora and other prison officials. They interacted with inmates to ascertain whether they were facing any grievances or difficulties during their incarceration and reviewed the overall arrangements inside the prison.
During the inspection, the team visited the jail's langar hall (kitchen) and examined the quality, hygiene and preparation of food being served to prisoners. The jail authorities were directed to ensure that inmates are provided hygienic, nutritious and quality meals in accordance with prescribed standards.
The Medical Officer on duty was also summoned during the visit to brief the inspection team about the health status of the inmates. Medical facilities and healthcare services available in the jail were reviewed, with emphasis on ensuring timely and adequate treatment for prisoners.
The inspection also covered the Special Security Cell, where hardcore and high-risk prisoners are lodged. Jatinder Kaur personally interacted with inmates housed in the high-security ward, enquiring about their welfare, the status of their pending cases and any legal or personal issues they were facing. The grievances raised by the inmates were heard, and necessary directions were issued to the concerned authorities for appropriate action.
Emphasising the importance of protecting the rights of prisoners, the District and Sessions Judge said that the health, dignity and legal rights of every inmate must be safeguarded and that all facilities mandated under law should be provided without discrimination.
The surprise visit was part of the District Legal Services Authority's ongoing initiative to monitor prison conditions, facilitate access to legal aid and ensure humane treatment of persons in judicial custody while addressing their genuine grievances.
