Punjab BJP Leader Harjit Singh Grewal Appointed Chairman of National Commission for Minorities
Centre names key Sikh face of BJP to head statutory body; Munawari Begum appointed Vice-Chairperson
CHANDIGARH: In a significant political appointment, the Centre on Friday appointed senior Punjab BJP leader Harjit Singh Grewal as the Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM), a key statutory body entrusted with safeguarding the rights and welfare of minority communities in the country.
The appointment is being seen as a major recognition of Grewal's long political career and his role as one of the BJP's most prominent Sikh leaders in Punjab. The Ministry of Minority Affairs also appointed S. Munawari Begum as the Vice-Chairperson of the Commission. Both have been appointed for a tenure of three years.
The National Commission for Minorities, constituted under the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992, monitors the constitutional and legal safeguards available to minority communities, investigates complaints of deprivation of rights, reviews the implementation of welfare programmes and advises the Central Government on policy matters concerning minorities.

In Punjab, Grewal has been State General Secretary and State Vice-President of the BJP and has played a key role in strengthening the party's organisational structure. He has also been a prominent spokesperson on political, agricultural and Sikh affairs, making him one of the BJP's principal Sikh faces in the state.
Grewal has held several important organisational positions in the Bharatiya Janata Party at both the national and state levels. He is presently a National Executive Member of the BJP and has earlier served as National Secretary of the party, National General Secretary of the BJP Kisan Morcha and National Vice-President of the BJP Kisan Morcha.

His appointment assumes significance at a time when the BJP is making sustained efforts to expand its political footprint in Punjab and strengthen its outreach among Sikh and other minority communities. Party leaders believe Grewal's experience in public life and his understanding of Punjab's socio-political landscape will help the Commission effectively address issues concerning minority rights and welfare.
The appointment also ensures continuity in the Commission's leadership by a Sikh representative, as Grewal succeeds former IPS officer and BJP leader Iqbal Singh Lalpura, who headed the Commission earlier.
The reconstituted National Commission for Minorities is expected to focus on strengthening constitutional safeguards, addressing grievances of minority communities and recommending policy measures to promote their educational, social and economic development across the country.
