Govt. of Punjab has envisaged adoption of “solar/RE city” as a part of its effort to enhance energy security and mitigate climate change risk and has identified the city of Amritsar

AMRITSAR: The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Govt. of India is working towards the development of renewable energy in the country and through its concept of “Solar/RE city” aims to proliferate renewable energy at the city level. In this regard, the Govt. of Punjab has envisaged adoption of “solar/RE city” as a part of its effort to enhance energy security and mitigate climate change risk and has identified the city of Amritsar in Punjab which will be developed as ‘Solar/RE city’.

Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has been designated as the city Nodal Agency for this project. German Development cooperation (GIZ) along with its consultants are providing support for planning and implementation assistance to the city of Amritsar for transformation in 100% Solar/RE city. So far the GIZ project team along with their technical consultants, AHAsolar, Deloitte and Fraunhofer ISE, has been interacting with PEDA, Amritsar Municipal Corporation and the PSPCL in Amritsar on the roadmap of transformation of city.

In this regard, 190 buildings of 19 Govt. departments have been identified for installation of approx. 3.3 MW solar rooftop power plants under the said programme. Under the chairmanship of DC, Amritsar, Shri Harpreet Singh Sudan (IAS), a meeting was organized with all the govt, departments to plan the installation and further development of the Amritsar Solar/RE City. The meeting was attended by officials of PWD, BRTS, Punjab Health Department, Punjab Education Department, Irrigation Department, PSPCL, forest department, Khalsa Society,

The solar power plants shall be executed in the RESCO mode under which Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) will be signed between identified developer (through tendering process) and respective Govt. Departments.
