Channi's Open Defiance Puts Punjab Congress at Crossroads: Is He Preparing to Exit the Party?

CHANDIGARH: Former Punjab Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi appears to be on a collision course with the Congress high command, triggering speculation over whether he is preparing to part ways with the party or attempting to force a change in its Punjab leadership ahead of the crucial Assembly elections due later this year or early next year.
The latest developments suggest that the internal power struggle in the Punjab Congress has moved beyond routine factionalism and entered a stage where the party's electoral prospects could be seriously undermined if the leadership fails to restore discipline.
Open challenge to the high command
The immediate flashpoint is the continuation of Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president.
Sources in the party say Channi had personally met Rahul Gandhi and urged him to replace Raja Warring with him as the state party chief. However, the Congress leadership rejected the proposal and decided to continue with Raja Warring, signalling that there would be no change in the state leadership before the elections.
The matter appeared settled after AICC General Secretary and Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel publicly declared that the issue of the PPCC presidency was "closed."
Responding to repeated demands for a leadership change, Baghel remarked that the Congress was "not a children's game where the president can be changed every day," making it clear that the high command had no intention of reopening the issue.
Booth campaign disrupted
Instead of ending the controversy, the high command's decision appears to have intensified the confrontation.
As the Congress launched its statewide booth-level outreach programme under Baghel and Raja Warring to prepare for the Assembly elections, supporters of Channi allegedly disrupted several party meetings.
Incidents of slogan shouting against Baghel and Raja Warring were reported from Patiala, Sangrur and Mansa, where Channi loyalists demanded the removal of Raja Warring and installation of Channi as the state Congress chief.
The repeated disruptions have embarrassed the party leadership and raised questions over whether Channi is willing to accept the authority of the high command.
Senior Congress leaders privately admit that continuing public protests against officially appointed leaders could seriously damage the party's campaign at a time when it is attempting to present itself as the principal alternative to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party.
Pressure tactics or exit strategy?
Political observers believe Channi's current strategy leaves the Congress leadership with limited options.
One possibility is that Channi is attempting to build sufficient pressure to compel the high command to reconsider its decision on the PPCC presidency.
The second possibility is that he is deliberately escalating the confrontation, anticipating disciplinary action that could eventually lead to his expulsion from the party.
Some leaders interpret recent developments as preparation for an eventual political realignment.
Fueling speculation is the noticeable absence of the Congress' traditional "hand" symbol from Channi's recent social media posters, a move that has attracted attention within political circles. While the omission alone cannot be treated as evidence of an impending split, it has strengthened speculation that he may be distancing himself from the party's official identity.
Questions are now being openly discussed within political circles: if the Congress leadership refuses to change Raja Warring, will Channi continue in the party? Is he exploring options with another political formation? Or is he preparing to launch his own regional outfit by leveraging his support among Scheduled Caste voters?
At present, none of these possibilities has been officially confirmed by Channi or the Congress leadership.
SC vote bank remains Channi's political strength
Channi, Punjab's first Scheduled Caste Chief Minister, continues to project himself as a leader with significant influence among Dalit voters, who constitute nearly one-third of the state's population.
He has repeatedly asserted that the Scheduled Caste community remains his principal political base and that its support gives him independent political relevance.
Whether that support would translate into electoral success outside the Congress, however, remains uncertain.
Rahul Gandhi's warning
The developments also come against the backdrop of Rahul Gandhi's recent visit to Punjab, during which he delivered a strong message on party discipline.
Without naming any individual, Rahul Gandhi said no leader was bigger than the Congress and that those unwilling to accept party decisions would be shown the door.
The statement is now being viewed as a clear indication that the high command is unlikely to tolerate prolonged indiscipline if the confrontation continues.
A mixed electoral record
Channi's political journey has seen dramatic highs and lows.
He was elevated as Punjab Chief Minister in September 2021 after the Congress removed Captain Amarinder Singh in an attempt to revive the party's fortunes before the 2022 Assembly elections.
However, the experiment failed electorally.
The Congress suffered a crushing defeat in the 2022 Assembly elections under Channi's leadership, and Channi himself lost from both Assembly constituencies he contested.
He later returned to Parliament after winning the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat in 2024, restoring his position as one of the party's prominent Punjab faces.
Stakes for Congress
The timing of the internal conflict could hardly be worse for the Congress.
Political analysts believe widespread anti-incumbency against the AAP government led by Bhagwant Mann has created a significant opportunity for the Congress to regain power in Punjab.
Many observers believe the Congress has a realistic chance of performing strongly in the upcoming Assembly elections if it remains united and projects a cohesive leadership.
Instead, the party is grappling with an internal battle that threatens to overshadow its campaign against the ruling government.
High command faces difficult choice
The Congress leadership must now decide whether to continue persuading Channi to fall in line, initiate disciplinary proceedings if the disruptions persist, or seek another political compromise to preserve unity before the elections.
Allowing repeated public defiance without consequences could weaken the authority of the central leadership, while harsh action against a prominent Dalit leader carries its own political risks in a state where Scheduled Caste voters hold considerable electoral influence.
For now, the confrontation has become the biggest internal challenge facing the Punjab Congress. Whether Channi ultimately reconciles with the party leadership, is forced out, or charts an independent political course could significantly influence the Congress' prospects in the forthcoming Assembly elections.
