People dub “Government at Your Doorstep” campaign as “Jhoot at Your Doorstep”

CHANDIGARH: The latest publicity campaign of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) — ‘Government at Your Doorstep’ — launched by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in Ludhiana, has turned into an embarrassment for the party after several of their claims were found to be misleading. What began as a show of administrative efficiency has now become a subject of ridicule across social media platforms.

At the launch event, Kejriwal announced that citizens could now avail driving licence and other transport-related services from the comfort of their homes. “You can call 1076 anytime — even at 10 PM — and our government staff will visit your home with a printing machine to complete all documentation, ” he told the gathering, locking up the RTO office symbolically to mark the shift towards doorstep delivery of services.

However, the reality turned out to be very different. When citizens dialled 1076, they were informed that the services operate only between 9 AM and 5 PM, with two working slots — 9 AM to 1 PM, and 2 PM to 5 PM. Staff members at Sewa Kendras categorically denied accepting any appointments after 5 PM. The contrast between Kejriwal’s statement and the ground reality has left citizens mocking the promise as another hollow claim.

Adding to the controversy, Kejriwal’s recent speech in Surat, Gujarat — delivered alongside Bhagwant Mann — included several exaggerated claims about flood relief in Punjab. Kejriwal stated that 23 districts of Punjab were hit by devastating floods and that the state government had transferred ₹50, 000 per hectare into farmers’ accounts within a month.

In truth, official records confirm that only 12 districts were affected by flooding. Moreover, no compensation has yet reached the farmers, despite Bhagwant Mann’s earlier assurance that payments would be made before Diwali. The state government had announced ₹20, 000 per acre for crop loss, but the girdawari (field assessment) process remains incomplete.

Farmers across several districts are still struggling to reclaim their sand-covered fields, pooling resources and manpower to level the land in the absence of government assistance. “Not a single rupee has been credited so far, ” said a farmer from Patiala. “We were promised quick help, but we are on our own again.”

Before becoming chief minister, Bhagwant Mann had often criticised previous Congress and Akali-BJP governments for their apathy towards farmers. He had famously promised to compensate not only crop loss but also the loss of “hens and goats.” Those statements have now resurfaced on social media, where users are sharing old clips of Mann’s fiery speeches alongside current ground realities, turning them into viral memes.

Bhagwant Mann frequently makes tall claims about transforming Punjab’s education and healthcare systems, but many of his statements are contradicted by ground realities. His assertions often draw sharp criticism, with social media users mocking him for what they describe as exaggerated or misleading claims.

The duo’s credibility has been further dented by the recent CBI arrest of Punjab Police DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar in a corruption case. Despite his long-standing rhetoric on “zero tolerance towards corruption, ” CM Mann has remained silent on the issue, drawing sharp criticism from opposition parties and the public alike.

As a result, social media platforms are flooded with videos and memes ridiculing both leaders. From parody reels to sarcastic posts, users have dubbed the “Government at Your Doorstep” campaign as “Jhoot at Your Doorstep”, reflecting growing disillusionment among citizens.

For Kejriwal and Mann, who built their political image around honesty and transparency, the growing laughter online underscores a deeper crisis of credibility — one that even their slick campaigns may find hard to repair.
