The power demand in Punjab rose today amid heat wave conditions and rising day temperature for the first time in June. The power demand was 15429 MW on Tuesday afternoon leading to unscheduled power cuts across the state. Last year on June 9 the maximum power demand was 15481 MW with supply of 3290 lakh units.
Power surge
With demand for electricity surging, many cities and semi-urban areas are now experiencing prolonged power cuts in addition to routine load shedding. The inventors of consumers in some areas have become dead due to long unscheduled power cuts
The power demand on Monday was 14200 MW and on Sunday it was 12250 MW. Last year it was 13565 MW on the corresponding day. Punjab’s own gross generation was over 5400 MW ion Tuesday afternoon. The state was buying cheaper solar power during day time. The thermal units in the state sector as well as the private sector are running at half load. The state sector thermal units generation was 1700 MW and the private sector was generating 2700 MW. The solar power in the state was generating 444 MW. The drawl schedule of PSPCL from the northern grid was 10525 MW today afternoon. One unit of Ropar which was under annual maintenance and it was revived Tuesday afternoon. this week. . Ranjit Sagar Dam units will run after the solar power is reduced .
All the state sector thermal plants have more than one month coal stock.Rajpura thermal has 27 days coal stock while Talwandi Sabo has 20 days coal stock.

On several days this summer, the spot price of electricity in the real-time market segment on the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) — the country’s biggest power trading bourse -- is cheaper during daytime in multiple time slots, only to surge to the regulatory ceiling of Rs 10 per unit (kWh) during night-time.
