LUCKNOW: In one of the deadliest fire tragedies to hit Uttar Pradesh in recent years, at least 15 students were killed and several others injured after a massive fire broke out in a coaching centre located in the Aliganj area of Lucknow on Monday. Panic gripped the locality as flames rapidly engulfed the building, forcing students to jump from balconies and windows in a desperate attempt to save their lives.

According to eyewitnesses, thick smoke and flames spread through the building within minutes, trapping dozens of students attending classes inside the coaching institute. The centre was reportedly operating from the upper floor of a commercial building situated in a densely populated area. As smoke filled classrooms and staircases, many students found themselves with no safe escape route.

Several videos circulating on social media showed terrified students hanging from balconies and jumping onto the street below while local residents attempted to help them before emergency services arrived. Witnesses said screams could be heard from inside the building as people struggled to escape.

Fire brigade personnel, police teams and disaster response units rushed to the spot and launched a large-scale rescue operation. Firefighters battled intense flames for several hours before bringing the blaze under control. Ambulances ferried the injured to nearby hospitals where many were admitted with severe burn injuries and fractures sustained while jumping from the building.

Officials said that several victims were found trapped inside the premises after the fire spread through classrooms and corridors. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed profound grief over the loss of lives. He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and directed officials to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured. According to government sources, the Chief Minister cancelled his scheduled programmes and rushed to Lucknow to monitor the rescue and relief operations.

Senior government officials, police officers and district administration personnel remained at the site throughout the day. A high-level inquiry has been ordered to determine whether the coaching institute complied with fire safety norms and whether negligence contributed to the scale of the disaster.

Families of students gathered outside hospitals and the accident site, anxiously awaiting information about their loved ones. Scenes of grief and anguish were witnessed as relatives identified victims and demanded strict action against those responsible.

The incident is likely to trigger a statewide review of fire safety measures in coaching centres, educational institutions and commercial buildings. Authorities have indicated that criminal proceedings may be initiated if violations of safety regulations are found during the investigation.
