Cong govt caused a loss of Rs 1,000 crore to sugarcane farmers:Bikram Singh Majithia

PUNJAB NEWS EXPRESS | September 07, 2021 06:31 PM

HOSHIARPUR: Former minister Bikram Singh Majithia today said the Congress government had caused a loss of Rs 1.000 crore to sugarcane farmers alone by refusing to provide a remunerative State Advised Price (SAP) to them on their sugarcane crop.

The senior SAD leader attended a function here during the course of which Harsimran Singh Harji Bajwa, the nephew of former Congress MP Varinder Singh Bajwa, joined the SAD.

Mr Bikram Majithia said it was shocking that the Congress government refused to increase the SAP of sugarcane for four and a half years. “It is due to this that our Punjab farmers suffered a loss of Rs 1, 000 crore vis a vis farmers of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. This refusal to come to the aid of farmers has harmed not only the sugarcane growers but also the cause of diversification in the State”. He also explained how the new SAP of Rs 360 per quintal had been announced towards the fag end of Congress rule knowing fully well that the money had to be paid next year when the Congress would not be in power. Mr Majithia also announced that the next SAD led government was committed to paying cane growers a SAP of Rs 380 per quintal.

Mr Majithia said the government had failed to implement any of the promises made to the people and every section of society had been betrayed by it. He said there was no hope from the Congress which was engaged in a battle for the top chairs and was least concerned about the issues of the proper. He said the Congress was divided into three groups - Thoko Taali, Congress Amarinder and Congress Indira. “While two of these groups are in a constant fight with each other, the Congress Indira faction does not know which camp to choose on any given day”.

Answering a media query, Mr Majithia said he was confident that the truth would win and those like Sanjay Singh, who had indulged in mischievous defamation, would be awarded just punishment. “I had stated from the very beginning that try as he might to run away, Sanjay Singh would not be able to escape the long arm of the law. This is now coming true”, he added.

Senior leader Sohan Singh Thandal and youth leader Sarabjot Singh Sabi was also present on the occasion.
