58 flower growers get training in floral-business expansion at PAU
LUDHIANA: Witnessing the participation of 58 members of PAU Flower Growers Club, the monthly training camp at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) urged the farmers to diversify their floral fields with the sowing of the new crops and the adoption of the nouveau varieties of the traditional crops. The training was held under the guidance of Dr TS Riar, Additional Director Communication, and Programme Director.
In his welcome address, Dr Parminder Singh, Head, Department of Floriculture and Landscaping, explained the cultivation techniques for chrysanthemum, one of the most sought after flowers in Punjab. Adoption of multihued varieties of chrysanthemum can lead to floral diversity and economic expansion, he added. The nursery of Gul-e-Sahir and Punjab Anuradha, newly evolved varieties of chrysanthemum, are available for sale and can be purchased by the farmers and flowers enthusiasts, he added. Besides, tulips, orchids, hyacinths, Iris Hollandica, etc. are upcoming new flower crops, all set to change the trend and diversify floriculture, he said.
The traditional marigold cultivation and its management was equally important keeping in view its low price and high demand among commoners, religious places, educational institutions, etc., observed floriculture expert Dr Ranjit Singh.

Mr Varinder Singh, Programme Coordinator, while welcoming the farmers, advised the promotion of floriculture and landscaping for giving impetus to horticulture, crop diversification and economic stability.
The President of the Association Mr GS Shergill, a progressive flower grower, proposed a vote of thanks and discussed the flower market proposal.
