Punjab-Origin Woman Shot Dead in Targeted Shooting in Toronto; Brampton Man Charged with First-Degree Murder
TORONTO: A 26-year-old woman of Punjab origin was shot dead in what police have described as a targeted attack in Toronto's Etobicoke area early Friday morning. Police have arrested a 37-year-old Brampton man and charged him with first-degree murder.
According to Toronto Police, officers responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 7 a.m. near the intersection of Humberwood and Rexdale boulevards. Investigators said the victim and the accused had a brief interaction before the suspect allegedly opened fire.
Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but the victim, identified as Navneet Kaur, 26, of Toronto, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the accused fled the area before officers arrived. Following an investigation, the suspect was located and arrested by officers of the Ontario Provincial Police.
The accused, Sharnjeet Singh, 37, of Brampton, has been charged with first-degree murder and failing to comply with an undertaking. He was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters, Toronto Police Inspector Scott Bradbury said investigators believe the victim was specifically targeted and that the incident does not pose an ongoing threat to the public.
"We believe this is an isolated incident involving a targeted victim, and there is no additional risk to residents in the neighbourhood," Bradbury said.
A witness who was nearby told local media that he saw a man approach the woman and speak with her for about 30 seconds before pulling out a firearm and shooting her. The witness said the suspect then calmly walked away toward Highway 427.
The incident has left local residents shocked. A nearby resident said he had considered the neighbourhood safe during the six or seven years he had lived there but now feels unsettled by the brazen daylight shooting.
Police said Navneet Kaur's death marks Toronto's 22nd homicide of 2026. Investigators have appealed to anyone with information or video footage related to the shooting to contact Toronto Police as the investigation continues.
