PHAGWARA: Tension prevailed in Phagwara and activists of Balmiki community sat on dharna in protest of allegedly defiling of a banner of Bhagwan Balmiki on Cinema road here today.
The Phagwara police have arrested a man under Section 295 of the IPC for allegedly defiling a banner related to the Bhagwan Valmiki Shobha Yatra by smearing mud on it on Monday.
The banner was displayed near the Naiyan Chowk temple, and the act of desecration led to a protest by local residents, who blocked the road in outrage.
Upon receiving information, SP Rupinder Kaur Bhatti arrived at the scene to pacify the demonstrators. Following investigations, the police registered a case against the accused, identified as Raj Kumar, and subsequently arrested him. Several prominent locals, including Dharamveer Sethi, Satish Salhotra, Krishan Hero, Anu Sahota, Pawan Atwal, Gaurav Ghai, Roshan Lal Sethi, Pamm Pradhan, and Pamm Atwal, participated in the protest.
