PHAGWARA: A remand prisoner was seriously injured after a clash broke out between two groups inside Kapurthala Modern Jail on Wednesday, causing panic within the premises before staff intervened to restore order. Officials said the injured inmate, identified as Jashanpreet Singh, a resident of Urban Estate, Kapurthala, was immediately shifted to the Civil Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. Doctors on duty confirmed that he sustained a deep head injury requiring four stitches.

According to Singh, who has been lodged in the jail for the past year in connection with an assault case, the incident occurred when he stepped out of his cell. He alleged that four to five inmates confronted him and initiated an argument, which escalated when he attempted to pacify the situation. The assailants reportedly attacked him using hard objects, including a metal ladle and spoon.

Jail staff rushed to the spot upon receiving information about the scuffle and managed to separate the two groups. Authorities have prepared a detailed report on the incident and forwarded it to the Kotwali police station for further investigation. Jail officials said security within the facility has been tightened following the clash.
