Chandigarh man duped for Rs 40 lakh by fake ED officials

CHANDIGARH: Online scammers impersonating, as ED officers duped on employee of the Homepathic Medical College and Hospital, Sector 26, of Rs39.7 lakh. The scammers told the victim that his SIM card was being used for terrorist activites and illegal transactions in two banks. Later, the victim's father was also duped by the scammers.

On the statement of the victim, the cyber cell police registered a case against unknown persons and have started a probe.

In his complaint, Navpinder Singh said that on June 24, 2024, he received a call. The caller introduced himself as Sunil K Mishra from the Delhi Communication Regulatory Authority of India and told him that a SIM activated against his Aadhaar number was linked to terrorist activites and illegal transcations in SBI anf HDFC.

Navpinder denied any knowledge of the same. Sunil then transferred the video call to a fake police station, where a supposed police officer introduced himsleg as ADC. The officer claimed the charges were serious and that Navpinder needed to file a report in court. The victim was shown various fake documents to demand money on diferent dates.Frightened Navpinder asked his father for money.

Later, Navpinder's father also received a call from an unknown person on July 11, 2024, and the caller claimed that his son Navpinder was in police custody and demanded money, for his release.
