AI, Cyber Surveillance Help Kapurthala Police Track Down Wanted Criminals Across States
PHAGWARA: Leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), cyber surveillance and advanced technical investigation tools, the Kapurthala Police headed by Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora IPS have achieved a major breakthrough by arresting three accused involved in separate heinous crimes from different parts of the country after prolonged manhunts, significantly strengthening the district's crime detection capabilities.
According to a senior police officer, the district police, under the supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Toora, have successfully used modern cyber technology to trace and apprehend criminals who had been constantly changing locations to evade arrest. The three accused were wanted in separate serious criminal cases, including murder, kidnapping and extortion, and had remained absconding for long periods.
One of the most challenging cases involved the murder of a youth, Gurdev Singh, whose body was allegedly dumped near Dayalpur village along a national highway after he was abducted. The accused continued shifting hideouts following the crime, making conventional investigation difficult. However, a specially constituted technical team used cyber intelligence and digital surveillance to trace and arrest the accused.
In another operation, police arrested an accused from Uttarakhand near the Indo-China border after he had managed to remain on the run for nearly three months by frequently changing locations. Officials said the accused was involved in multiple serious criminal cases and had repeatedly succeeded in escaping police before his arrest through technology-based tracking.
The report further states that another fugitive was arrested after investigators analysed thousands of digital leads over several weeks using mobile phone analysis, electronic surveillance and cyber intelligence. Police also monitored online communication and technical footprints in a kidnapping and extortion case where the accused allegedly remained in contact with associates through foreign internet networks while constantly changing hideouts. Timely technical intervention enabled police to prevent further criminal activity and secure the accused's arrest.
Highlighting the district's growing technological capabilities, SSP Gaurav Toora said criminals can no longer rely on changing locations or using sophisticated communication methods to escape the law. He said Kapurthala Police are increasingly integrating AI-assisted investigation, cyber forensics and technical surveillance into criminal investigations, with equal emphasis on crime prevention and swift detection.
The SSP added that the district has developed one of Punjab's strongest technical investigation teams and has already dismantled several organised criminal gangs through the effective use of modern cyber technology. He expressed confidence that continued investment in advanced policing techniques would further improve the force's ability to investigate complex crimes and bring offenders to justice.
