Balancing Bio-diversity to defeat novel virus--says noted naturalist Dr. P.C Sharma

PUNJAB NEWS EXPRESS | May 21, 2020 12:33 PM

CHANDIGARH: Man must rise above the earth to the top of the atmosphere and beyond for only then he will fully understand the world in which he lives and true wisdom comes to each of us when we realize how little we understand about life, ourselves, and the world around us quoted renowned naturalist Dr. P.C Sharma from the ancient philosophy of Socrates which acquires deeper meaning today.

Man for his personal greed has destroyed the beauty of nature. Deforestation, urbanization and over exploitation of natural resources led to extinction of rare species of plants and animals including avian fauna. It has tilted the environmental balance and assumed a dimension that attracts the attention of the whole world. Now the world is in quest of finding ways which can help preserve our most precious assets in planet's bio-diversity. If bio-diversity loss is not realized and stopped forthwith, human survival would not be possible in the impending Century. Most of the biological species have confined to history and GenX would not see them in natural habitat again lamented Dr. Sharma.

To press the message home, an International Bio-diversity Day created in 1993 is being celebrated all over the world on May 22 every year to promote and raise global awareness about bio-diversity related issues. Apart from other larger initiatives of global cooperation, the main areas of bio-diversity concerns viz. health and sustainable development, and disaster risk reduction and vulnerable groups are also deliberated. Plans are evolved, huge amount is being spent to rectify man’s folly. As usual yearly assessment is being made and when desired results are not realized, it is natural to raise questions about “what we are celebrating.” Commemorations planned for the day but commemorating a day is not enough, reasons for celebration should have been the life and quality of bio-diversity we have nurtured.

Celebrating the “mere announcement” of bio-diversity safety seems “ridiculous” to some, who argue that the indicators are barely below satisfactory cannot be overlooked. “What does it means when biological diversity is being plundered all over the world, said an environmentalist Dr.P.C Sharma who has conceptualized and guided more than a dozen of scientific and natural history, and bio-diversity projects over the last three and half decades of his public and museums career. I have seen the celebrations every year losing its values, found the idea of celebration elitist and not connected to the paramount importance, says Dr Sharma. Bio-diversity has been compromised, and hundreds of rare animals and plants species vanished from the universe if then we talk of celebrations that have been lined up by the government even those are ill-conceived said Dr.Sharma.

Cruel multi-billion-dollar businesses have been exploiting wild animals on an industrial global scale and we are now all seeing the true cost of that. The current crisis of covid-19 pandemic isn’t just about wild animals being sold for food. It’s much bigger than that, it’s about greed and the commodification of wild animals at every level. “If we learn anything from this situation, it is that we need to leave wild animals where they belong, in the wild. We all have a responsibility to make a shift in our behaviour and attitudes towards animals that could save the lives of millions of people, animals and our economies.“Some measures are being taken at national level, but there is a need for a coordinated global action. We urgently need to persuade the G20 to take steps towards implementing a global wildlife ban to protect the human race from future pandemics corroborated Dr. Sharma with the statement of World Animal Protection Organisation.”

The man made imbalance in life ecosystems has thus resulted in trillions of microscopic organisms viz. viruses and bacteria resorting to enmity with mankind in the form of deadly diseases like Covid-19 pandemic, most of the which are otherwise friendly in their functioning .The intimate bio-diversity relationship therefore, requires to be advisably balanced to defeat such pandemic said Dr. Sharma.

The need for a global ban on wildlife trade is urgent and extremely important. What we are witnessing with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic is the result of human exploiting wild animals for their gains. This must stop now. The Prime Minister of India understands the importance of wildlife preservation and has supported animal welfare issues in the past.

"Terrible wars and demonic diseases will decimate the human race; and savage, cold and scathing heat, scorching drought and sweeping floods, will terrorize the people retold Dr. Sharma from great ancient Indian Epic "Mahabharta.”  We stand at a point from where two roads diverge—one we have long been travelling is deceptively easy. A smooth super highway on which we progress with great speed but at its end lies disaster. The other road is less travelled by, offers us last chance and choice to reach a destination that assures the preservation of the mother earth and protection of biological wealth, advised Himalyan Biologist Dr.Sharma.
