APSWDP Dialogue on Status-Quo of Transgender Community: Issues,Challenges and Way Forward

CHANDIGARH: Under the able guidance of Hon’ble Mr Justice Jaswant Singh, Executicve Chairman, State Legal Services Authority, UT Chandigarh , a Virtual Dialogue on UN75 2020 and Beyond Shaping Our Future Together Series III: What Future We Want with the theme 'Status Quo of Transgender Community: Issues, Challenges and Way Forward', was jointly organized by Association of Professional Social Workers and Development Practitioners (APSWDP) and State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) on 19th September 2020 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm.

Mahavir Singh, Additional District Judge (ADJ) cum Member Secretary, State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) Chandigarh was the Chief Guest and Dr. Monica Singh, Associate Professor and Chairperson, Centre for Social Work, Panjab University, Chandigarh was the Special Guest. Shri Gautam Bhardwaj, Empanelled Lawyer, State Legal Services Authority, Chandigarh and Mx. Kajal Mangalmukhi, Transgender Rights Activist were the Panelist.

A total of 110 participants from different walks of life attended this social dialogue. During the event, various questions were raised by the participants and the same were diligently addressed by Mahavir Singh, Dr Monica Singh, Mx. KajalMangalmukhi and Shri Gautam Bhardwaj.

Issues such as adoption of transgender children, linking with various schemes of Government of India, stigma and discrimination against the transgender community, challanges faced by them during the COVID-19 situation, and comprehensive city level survey of transgenders were few of the questions raised by the participants.An overwhelming response was received from the participants in form of their feedback.
