AMRITSAR:The musical dance bonanza marked the celebrations of ‘Tiyaan’ at Khalsa College for Women (KCW) today as the faculty members and students, clad in traditional dresses, resorted to Gidda and Bhangra. They recited ‘Bolian’ (verses from folk music) and performed colourful dances to celebrate ‘Savan’, the festival associated with good times and festivity.

The College termed the festival as dictum of ‘more powers to women’ as the students and teachers joined hands to air their views of respecting women through musical presentations. “It is a festival of the girls, for the girls. We welcome the new rainy season by dancing to the traditional music”, said Tejinder Kaur Chhina, MD, Little Flower School, who was the chief guest at the function.
Principal Dr. Surinder Kaur also said the event was dedicated to the rising power of women. The dignitaries including chief guest and Principal also performed Gidda and said the festival reminds all of us about the good times in life. The stalls for the eatables and special gifts added to the colour of the festivity as students resorted to merry-making.

Dr. Surinder said the festival is traditionally celebrated in Punjab during the month of Savan and hoped that festivals like these will connect our youth with our culture and traditions. “We need to inculcate the sense of belongingness amongst our youth regarding our rich cultural traditions”, said she.

`This is the perhaps only festival which is meant entirely for women”, said another teacher adding that this is also the festival of hope that problems in life and society would be overcome with courage and grit.
