Experts motivate female researchers on Science Day

MOHALI: University School of Sciences celebrated National Science Day at the Rayat Bahra University here.

On the first day of the celebrations, an innovation contest for women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) was held catalyzed under the `Banner: Mission Innovate Punjab - Celebration of Women in STEM.

The programme was supported by Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST), and National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), and the Union Department of Science and Technology (DST).

During the inaugural ceremony, Dr Harvinder Kaur, Dean, University School of Sciences, introduced the audience about the significance of National Science Day celebrations.

Prof Daljit Sigh, Vice-Chancellor, while congratulating the organizers motivated the participants by highlighting the role of women in science and technology.

Dr Shweta Sharma, Chairperson of the Institute of Forensic Science and Criminology, Panjab University, Chandigarh, in her keynote address stressed on more participation of female students in different areas of STEM .

Dr Harvinder Kaur Jassal from Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Mohali, provided information about various opportunities available to the female researchers provided by the Union government.

Dr Rajni Garg, Head, Department of Chemistry, while introducing the contest said that participations were invited from the potential female faculty, students, researchers and incubates and start-ups. The first call of the contest received 80 proposals in the specified theme of science and engineering and the selected participants presented their proposals on the final contest day.

During the second day of the celebrations, a visit to Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO), Chandigarh, was conducted for the undergraduate and postgraduate students of the school.

At the valedictory session prizes were distributed to the winners. Dr Simerjit Kaur, Head Department of Life Sciences, presided over the concluding function.
