Expert talk on Alternative Dispute Resolution at RBU

August 07, 2019 01:22 PM

MOHALI: Rayat Bahra University School of Law in collaboration with Pepperdine University, USA organised a lecture on "Alternative Dispute Resolution" for Law students.

The lecture was delivered by Dr Sukhsimranjit Singh, Managing Director, Straus Institute of Dispute Resolution, CA (USA).

He comprehensively explained the concept of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), its various kinds including arbitration, mediation, conciliation, Lok Adalat and judicial settlement. He explained certain immutable skills necessary for a law graduate to master the art of advocacy.

Dr Singh said EDR typically denotes a wide range of dispute resolution processes and techniques that act as a means for disagreeing parties to come to an agreement short of litigation: a collective term for the ways that parties can settle disputes, with the help of a third party. However, ADR is also increasingly being adopted as a tool to help settle disputes alongside the court system itself.

The rising popularity of ADR can be explained by the increasing caseload of traditional courts, the perception that ADR imposes fewer costs than litigation, a preference for confidentiality, and the desire of some parties to have greater control over the selection of the individual or individuals who will decide their dispute, Dr Singh added.
