Drug Overdose Death in Phagwara Sparks Concern Over Rising Drug Abuse

PHAGWARA: Phagwara, June 10: Drug abuse has once again become a major issue of concern in Phagwara city after a suspected drug overdose death was reported from Subhash Nagar Valmiki Mohalla, raising serious questions about ongoing anti-drug efforts in the state.

While the Punjab Government and police administration continue to carry out strict action against drug traffickers under the “War Against Drugs” campaign, the latest incident has created fresh doubts among local residents about the effectiveness of these measures on the ground.

According to information, a young man reportedly died due to a suspected drug overdose in the locality. Following the incident, strong resentment has been expressed by residents of the area, who alleged that drug peddling has been going on openly in the locality for a long time and several youths have already fallen into addiction. Locals further alleged that despite repeated complaints to the authorities, no effective action was taken to curb the illegal drug trade.

Residents also made serious allegations against a local youth, claiming that drug-related activities were being carried out from his residence and that several young people were frequently visiting the house, which had disturbed the peace and environment of the area. They also said that women and girls in the locality feel unsafe and are finding it difficult to move freely.

Meanwhile, the youth accused by locals appeared before the camera and admitted that he himself is a drug addict. He stated that a youth named Vishal from Amritsar had been staying with him and that both had consumed drugs together. He further claimed that Vishal died after consuming an excessive quantity of drugs.

After receiving information about the incident, the police reached the spot and took custody of the deceased body, initiating further investigation.

Phagwara SP Madhvi Sharma stated that the exact cause of death will only be confirmed after the post-mortem report is received.Meanwhile when contacted Senior Superintendent of the Police Gaurav Toora while talking to The Tribune said the police have already intensified War against Drugs and launching search operations also. SSP said the matter is being examined by phagwara police which could be exposed after autopsy test of the body.SSP said the cops are also investigating whether it was a case of overdose or some other causes behind the death of the youth.
