Ramkumar rallies to win in singles and Leader in doubles

CHANDIGARH: Down by one set, Indian qualifier Ramkumar Ramanathan took two hours and five minutes to dispose of the challenge of Sergiv Stakhosky of Ukraine in three-setter by 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-2 in the first round singles match in the $583,585 ATP Tennis Tournament on grass in Newport, Rhode Island on Tuesday.
Ramkumar saved eight out of 10 break points and won three out of nine break points. Sergiv Stakhosky  saved six out of nine break points and won two out of 10 break points. Ramkumar won 47 out of 61 first service points (77 per cent) and 25 out of 44 (57 per cent) points on second service. His rival won 43 out of 61 points on first service (70 per cent) and 27 out of 44 points (61 per cent) on second service.
Both fired five aces each. Ramkumar committed five double faults while Sergiv Stakhosky committed four double faults. After splitting the first two well-contested sets, Ramkumar enjoyed an upper hand in the third set which he clinched by 6-2 to move into the second round.
Ramkumar will now face fourth seeded Ugo Humbert of France in the second round.
Leander Paes, partnering Marcus Daniell of New Zealand, rallied to beat Australian pair fo Max Purcell and Luke Saville 2-6, 6-2, 10-5 in the doubles first round matc in one hour and eight minutes.
