Punjab men and Railway women basket titles

CHANDIGARH: Punjab and Indian Railways were crowned champions in the men's and women's sections, respectively in the 69th Senior National Basketball Championship 2018-19 being held at Bhavnagar in Gujarat. It was 11th time Punjab men have claimed the team trophy in the men's category.

Punjab defeated Services by 74-65 in the final while in the women's final, Indian Railways overcame a stiff resistance from Tamil Nadu by 88-71.

Punjab men meant business from the word go. They established a three-point lead (22-19) at the end of first quarter. Services put up a good fight in the second quarter and contained Punjab score to 37-33 after second quarter where Punjab could win by 15-14. Services continued the pressure and won the third quarter with a wafer-thing margin of one point (18-17). At the conclusion of third quarter Punjab were leading by 54-51.

 Punjab went all out in the fourth and final quarter which they clinched by 20-14 and the title with a margin of 74-65.

 Punjab Sports Minister  Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, a former international shooter, extended heartiest congratulations to the team as well as the coaches and also the office bearers of the Punjab Basketball Association (PBA) President and former DGP Mr. Rajdeep Singh Gill and General Secretary Mr. Teja Singh Dhaliwal for this shining achievement.

Railway women suffered a slight jolt as they were beaten by plucky Tamil Nadu in the first quarter by 23-18. However, the Railway women reorganised their game and clinched the second quarter by 24-17 and led 42-40 at half time. Continuing to dominate Railway women won the third quarter with a comfortable margin 25-17 for a lead of 69-55. With a 19-16 verdict in the fourth and final quarter, Indian Railway women emerged champions by 88-61.

Men final: Punjab bt Services by 74-65 (22-19, 15-14, 17-18, 20-14).

Women final: Indian Railways bt Tamil Nadu by 88-71 (18-23, 24-17, 27-15, 19-16).
