SLSA holds ‘Child Friendly Chandigarh’ marathon

CHANDIGARH: As many as 2,000 people from different walks of life along with few professional international and national runners took part in the third edition of ‘Punjab half Marathon-2018’ for a cause ‘Child Friendly-Chandigarh’ here on Sunday morning.
This mega event was hosted by the State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) Chandigarh in collaboration with Bachpan Bachao Andolan , CCPCR and National Level Trust Thrill Zone.
The marathon which marked the presence of 4 year old to 77 years old participants was flagged off by Mr Mahavir Singh, Member secretary State Legal services Authority, Chandigarh and Mr. Om Prakash the Director campaign (Kailash Satyarthi Children Foundation). Prizes were distributed by Mr.V.K.Kapoor Chief Coordinator NALSA Scheme.  He inspired the participants by giving away prizes to the 60 winners and stressed on the need of making the City beautiful child friendly. The mega event also saw the participation of disabled persons on wheelchairs.  
 The marathon had three categories covering the distance of 21 km 10 km and 5 km. The marathon commenced from Chandigarh club at 6.30 am which crossed Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake, Kishangarh, and IT Park and ended at the point from where it had started. Asian Marathon Champion (1992), Dr Sunita Godara was the Marathon Ambassador for the event.
 Mohinder Kaur Kataria, motivational speaker handled the arrangements of the marathon and motivated the participants to run for the cause. 
In 21 km category for men in the age group of 18 to 30 years, Mandeep stood first who started the race with timing of 1:19:20. In the age group of 30-40 years Mohmad Qasim who secured the first position by finishing the race in 1:27:21.  
In the age group of 40-50, Stephan Van Merwe stood first by finishing the race in 1:25:26. In the age group of above 50- 60Krishan Kumar stood first who finished the race in 1:38:06. Amar Chauhan tool the lead in the age category of above 60 by finishing the race in  1:47:53.
 In the female category of 18 to 30 years, Sargun stood first by finishing the race in 2:04:36. In the age group of 30-40, Renu Mathpal secured the first position by finishing the race in 1:45:26.  In the age group of 40-50, Archana Jain was the winner who finished the race in 2:04:06. In above 50-60 category, Bimla Sanghwan was declared the winner who finished the race in2:06:19.
 While congratulating the winners, Founder of Thrill Zone, P C Kushwaha said that the marathon witnessed overwhelming response and would be back to the city beautiful with a new cause soon.
