JALANDHAR: Fully convinced that a dedicated IAS officer could make a difference in the lives of millions of people, Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Nakodar Ms. Amrit Singh was committed to bring a change in society through her noble ideas on women empowerment and cleanliness.
The young IAS officer of 2014 batch, has inherited the legacy of service of people as her maternal grandfather was an IAS officer of Punjab cadre. Ms. Amrit Singh, who did her BA Hons Economics from Miranda House, Delhi university, MA sociology from Delhi school of economics and MA Economics from IGNOU, grew up in an environment where her father an IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh Cadre and mother an IDES officer worked zealously for well being of people. Many a times she experienced that her parents gave up their personal lives for the larger good as they felt responsible for the improvement of the lives of others.
Inspired by her parent’s dedication towards people, Ms. Amrit Singh, as a growing, child decided that she would also join the coveted Civil Services. SDM Nakodar admits that what she was today was because of her parents. Ms. Amrit Singh said that she had positive role models in her life at a young age, she idolized them and that paid off.
In her posting as SDM in Nakodar, the IAS officer took a path breaking initiative of launching Saadiyan Dhian, Saada Maan scheme under the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao program. The scheme aimed at showcasing the local girls who had carved a niche for themselves in varied fields by naming the streets of the city on their names. Embracing another challenge, she launched a special campaign to give a clean look to filthy spots that were in state of neglect due to one reason or another. After identifying these spots she adopted three pronged strategy to clean, beautify and create these places as public utility.
Armed with zeal to serve the humanity in a befitting manner, the SDM said that a new history was being created at this juncture and every girl should be aware of it and realize that this was time to equalize themselves to males and to realize their strength from within. She said that nature doesn't discriminate between genders but unfortunately some people does adding that girls need to change this rather than feeling lesser than men. The SDM said that the girls should optimize their abilities and excel, which would act as a catalyst to change the society. She said that girls just need to feel empowered and truly have faith in themselves
