HAMIRPUR (HP): It is election time and surprising to see politicians working hared to meet the voters’ expectations rather than mere mincing words. One may look at their modesty or even a strategy. Both parties are playing political games and are busy to get their act together. All seem to be well aware that intentions, actions and decision are driven by a sole objective—win.

While the ruling party putting itself together to take a plunge and trying every trick in its book to ensure wins in all the four Lok Sabha seats in the State. The Congress too is fitting into the election gear to give blow to the BJP. The Congress kick-started its campaign by organizing rally in Hamirpur a stronghold of BJP.  Of the eight elections, the BJP has won Hamirpur Lok Sabha seat seven times.

The chief minister in his rallies has taken various decisions that would serve as sops for the people. But the logic of electrical arithmetic also cannot be ignored. If the past tenure of the Congress is the benchmark of development could not do well in assembly elections. It also goes to Lok Sabha election in absence of a ‘wave’ in its favour in the State.

Dissensions among top leaders of the Congress and problems with workers at ground level may spoil the fortune of the party. On the other BJP has many arrows in its quiver to target the Congress.  Both parties expecting to win all four seats in the State but an interesting dimension has been added to the political struggle with entry of BSP and as usual elephant has always been injurious to ‘hand’.

In Himachal Pradesh caste system is not so prevalent as in other states of the country. Dalit population is over 16 lakhs and ST around 3.25 lakh do not vote en block to one party. Screaming from under the Congress rubble in the State and its bare leadership cupboard is its dependence on an individual. Former chief ministers—Prem Kumar Dhumal and Virbhadra Singh- on their part are continuously touring the State as their political supremacy is more on test than the candidates.

The BJP will be organizing Narendra Modi’s rally in Shimla and Solan and the ‘Hindutva mascot’ seems to have grown larger in Himachal Pradesh than the Gujarat. The BJP feels optimistic about the repeat of last Lok Sabha election in the State. Political pundits in the State felt that the Congress onslaught against Narendra Modi with a hope of gaining mileage but they were grumbling about what a poor job they were doing.

While the Congress is hoping to carry forward the turnaround in fortune despite defeat in last assembly elections, it is finding itself in a spot. Rather than being able to consolidate on its gains, the party is plunging into deeper turmoil with each passing day with dissentions. Tousle a Kabaddi term BJP is now raiding deep into the Congress territory.

The BJP strategy is to give a longer rope to the Congress to tie itself in knots with anti-incumbency, internal dissensions, corruption, nationalism and the like. It has been taking a digs at the Congress therefore certainly blunt the BJP edge. After assembly election defeat, is trying to geat scion Rahul Gandhi from another poor show blame. On the other Narender Modi as the prime ministerial candidate seems to have turned around the picture for the party in the State.
