Punjab Governor presides over interaction session with Chandigarh school principals

CHANDIGARH: An interactive session was held at the conference hall of U.T. State Guest House with the Principals of Senior Secondary Schools and Heads of Secondary Schools of  Chandigarh. on Thursday.

V.P. Singh Badnore, Governor of Punjab and Administrator Chandigarh Adviser to the Administrator Manoj Parida was Guest of Honour. Aim of the interaction was to honour the principals and heads of schools for outstanding performance in the results of board exams particularly Class 10 examination, where city has recorded an improvement of 26.76 per cent in the pass percentage compared to the pass percentage of the previous year.  

Secretary Education  B.L. Sharma in his welcome address-cum-key note narrated, at length, a number of steps/initiatives taken by the department for putting into place an efficient, effective, responsive and accountable system, which enabled the Department to have this achievement of attaining pass percentage of 76 per cent in respect of Class10 and 81 pass percentage in Class 12 board results.  

Sharma also said that the department did a lot of introspection and analysis of the factors leading to dismal performance last year.  After considerable deliberation and comprehensive study, a number of initiatives were taken including rationalization of posts, dispensing away the system of grace marks, introduction of remedial classes, managing the class strength, formation of inspection teams, stern action against principals and teachers who had failed in discharging their duties and appreciation of the teaching faculty who had performed well.

A detailed power-point presentation was given by Mr. R.S. Brar, Director (Education) highlighting the commendable performance of the Education Department in National Achievement Survey (NAS) 2017, Performance Grading Index (PGI) carried out by the MHRD, post NAS interventions made by the Department work done by Education Department in collaboration with private schools in connection with preparation towards PISA, which will be held in 2021, launch of the project ‘PHOENIX’ which has been designed to track the learning outcomes of students and performance of teachers etc.

The principals and heads explained the initiatives taken by them in their respective schools for improving the quality of education and for ensuring outstanding performance in the board examinations.  The innovative techniques involved and methods used by them were also presented.  

V.P. Singh Badnore, lauded the efforts made by officers of the department including Secretary (Education) B.L. Sharma, Director (Education) R.S. Brar, Inspection Teams and Principals/Teachers for this achievement.  Mr Badnore also shared his experience and insights about running of education institutions and as to how we can bring about qualitative improvement in the system of education.  

Adviser to the Administrator Sh. Manoj Parida also appreciated highly the efforts made by senior, middle level officers as well as Principals and Teachers of the schools in bringing about transformation in the school education of Chandigarh.  Badnore and Mr Parida urged the officers of the department and Principals/teachers to raise the level of the targets substantially high so as to perform better than the private schools.

Honouring of the principals by the Administrator and the Adviser boosted their morale, impelling them to perform far better in the ensuing year. A lunch was also hosted by the Administrator for all the participants.
