Punjab Food Commission's special drive to encourage hand washing in schools bore fruit

Setting an extraordinary example for encouraging hand washing habit in students especially before serving mid day meal, Punjab State Food Commission has roped in industrial houses to arrange hand washing units in Government Schools.
Today, under this special drive, inaugurating the first unit set up at Government Middle Smart School Taunsa in SBS Nagar District, Member Punjab State Food Commission, Mr. A K Sharma said that he was trying to make his idea practical for the previous six months since his maiden visit to the district. Expressing gratitude to the Sun Pharma for giving its consent to provide 200 hand washing units, step by step,   in SBS Nagar district, he said that this initiative would set the precedent for other industrial houses to come forward to serve the needy schools and Anganwaris.
He said though this was not the responsibility of Food Commission but during the checking of various districts, it was observed that there was so many infrastructure needs to implement the National Food Safety Act in principle in the schools and anganwaris of state. He said that he has asked the ADC (D)  Sarabjit Singh Walia to coordinate with a number of industrial houses and NGOs to come forward for this noble cause and finally they got succeed in their mission.  Mr Sharma appreciated the efforts put in by the ADC ( D) Sarabjit Singh Walia for sensitising corporate houses to provide basic infrastructure to the schools to ensure hygiene in Mid Day Meal. Mr Sharma said that this experience would be replicated in other Districts too by discussing the matter with Chairman of the Commission, Mr D P Reddy.
District officials who were present included District Program Officer Manjit Kaur, District Education Officer ( EE) Pawan Kumar besides representative of Sun Pharma.
Mr Sharma said that after setting up hand washing units, we would vow for making kitchens for Anganwari Centers besides arrangment of fly catchers at all schools and anganwaris.
Earlier, Member Food Commission also visited Government Middle School Nai Majara and Anganwari center functional there. He minutely checked the supplementary food storage for children at Anganwari besides grains and raw material for mid day meal.
Monitoring the wheat distribution under National Food Safety Act at village Malikpur, Mr Sharma directed DFSC Rajnish Kaur to ensure proper quantity and quality of wheat being distributed to the beneficiaries.
At Government Middle School Taunsa, representatives from Sun Pharma, Naresh Dutta, Ms Anju Singh, Harjinder Singh and Surjit Chechi, School Headmaster Joginder Singh, Sarpanch Balbir Singh, Former Sarpanches D P Kataria and Master Krishan Chand, DEO Pawan Kumar and ADC Sarabjit Singh were also present.
