Situation at dhussi bandh along river Satlej is under control, Says, Nawanshehar DC

NAWANSHEHAR; "The situation at  the dhussi bandh along river Satlej falling in the district is quite under control ", says the Deputy Commissioner, Vinay Bublani while adding that, however, the Army and the other departments deputed to assist the Drainage Department to avert the apprehension of floods , would continue to keep vigil there though the downstream flow of water from Ropar head-works had receded considerably. At 7.00 pm. the downstream flow of water from Ropar Head-works has been reported 54526 cusics, he added.

It is worthwhile to mention here that after the release of water from Bhakhra Dam, fear stalked the residents of villages along Satlej river. As many as 67 villages of the Nawanshahr and Balachaur subdivisions were put on Red Alert. The Deputy Commissioner, Vinay Bublani and the SSP, Alka Meena, immediately come into action and geared up the different department to make elaborate arrangements to strengthen the dhussi bandh at the identified sensitive points to avert the threat of any breach. The works started at Bela Tajowal, Dugri, Khoja Bet in Balachaur sub division and at Tajowal Mandala, Burj Tehal dass, in Nawanshahr sub division is near completion. The Army and the NDRF has successfully plugged the pipes releasing water from the bein into Satlej river at village Khoja to check the increase of flow of water.

Avtar Singh and Kehar Chand, SDO, Drainage, Balachaur and Nawanshahr respectively, said that all the six sensitive sites had been strengthened.

Nawanshahr SDM, Dr. Vineet Kumar said that the flow of water had been receded from yesterday's 2. 23 lakh cusic to 54526 today. The administration had made all the arrangements for averting the fury of floods as well as rescue and rehabilitation of the residents.
Four more engineering Departments of district viz; PWD, Mandi Board, Panchayati Raj and Water Supply and Sanitation have been asked to remain on the disposal of Drainage to face any untoward situation.
