More than 5000 people involved directly in works of plugging breaches in river Satluj

JANIA(Jalandhar): In first of its kind initiative the work on plugging the breaches over river Satluj, including the 500 feet wide breach at Jania village, was going on in war footing with more than 5000 people involved directly in this mammoth exercise.

Divulging the details during a media interaction at the Dhussi bandh in village Jania, the Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Mr Varinder Kumar Sharma said that a total of 20 lakh sand bags, 5 lakh cubic feet boulders and 1000 quintals of Steel wire were required to fill the 18 breaches at various. He said that to plug these 18 breaches 5000 people have been roped in by the administration which includes Army, MNREGA workers, drainage department contractor’s labourers, skilled mechanics, Panchayats and volunteers from social organisations and others.

The technical guidance for the whole plugging operation is being provided by engineers of army and drainage department. Mr Sharma said that in order to ensure that the work of plugging was conducted smoothly the uninterrupted supply of boulders have been ensured by punjab government from Pathankot.

The Deputy Commissioner said that these boulders were being dumped at grain market in village Kamaalpura from where they were ferried to Jania breach in tractor trolleys. He said that the carriers from Ludhiana, Jalandhar, SBS Nagar, Pathankot and other districts have been pressed in service for smooth and hassle free supply of boulders. Likewise, Mr Sharma said that sand bags were being filled by 3200 MGNREGA workers and Panchayts of various villages. Sand bag filling work is going on continuously at village raiwala dona and kamalpur of lohian block and Mao saheb of phillaur block. Around 3200 MGNAREGA workers are toiling hard. Various Panchayts of lohian block are also contributing filled sand bags. Volunteers from various social organisations are also doing voluntary services at plugging sites.

The Deputy Commissioner said that breach at village Jania was being plugged under the direct supervision of the Indian Army who was constructing a ring of boulders besides plugging the breaches with sand bags. He said that the work was being executed in a highly professional manner and till date work of plugging 120 feet breach out of 600 feet ring bandh proposed has been completed. Sharma expressed hope that work would be completed very soon.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner said that the state government led by Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh was firmly committed to complete the ongoing work at the earliest. He said that there was no dearth of funds with the state government and every effort would be made to facilitate the people Of flood affected villages. Seven breaches out of total 11 which happened in phillaur area have been already plugged.

On the occasion Additional Deputy Commissioner Kulwant Singh, District Development and Panchayat Officer Iqbalpreet Singh Sahota and others were also present.
