Punjab to host Senior National Wrestling from Nov 29

CHANDIGARH: Wrestling Federation of India has allotted the 64th Men and 22nd Women Senior National Wrestling Championships which would be held at M.S. Bhullar Indoor Stadium, P.A.P, Jalandhar from  November 29  to December 1. This Championship would be dedicated to 550th Parkash Purb of Sahib Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Approximately 1400 outstanding wrestlers and officials from various states of India would participate

Addressing a press conference here today Padma Shri Kartar Singh, President, Punjab Wrestling Association  thanked WFI presodemt Brijbhushan Sharan Singh  for allotting the championship to Punjab.

Kartar Singh said that   renowned wrestlers namely Sushil Kumar, Bajrang Punia, Gurpreet Singh, Harpreet Singh, Gurpal Singh, Navjot Kaur, Gursharan Kaur and Vinesh Phogat would participate.  This championship has assumed more significance as winner wrestlers in each weight category would qualify for the qualifying events of the forthcoming Olympic Games-2020 scheduled in Tokyo.

Kartar Singh further revealed that various committees have been formed to facilitate the wrestlers and officials. The competition would be conducted on three wrestling mats in the Indoor Stadium and six electronic score boards would be used. Kartar Singh also said that to popularize the wrestling and ensure that the wrestling lovers settled in country and abroad enjoy the event, there would be live telecast of the event and would  be broadcast on various like social media and electronic media platforms. Adequate arrangements have been put in place for the boarding and lodging of the participating wrestlers, coaches and officials. The arrangements with regard to stay of the women wrestlers have been made in Jalandhar City, men wrestlers at PAP Complex and officials at various hotels.

On the occasion, Mr. P.R. Sondhi, Secretary of Punjab Wrestling Association and former chief coach of Indian wrestling team said that a Wrestling Championship for the wrestlers of Punjab for selecting Punjab team for the Senior Nationals is being conducted on October 19 and 20 at M.S. Bhullar Indoor Stadium, P.A.P, Jalandhar.

The Punjab Wrestling Association would honor the winners of this championship with special prizes. He also said that the Punjab Wrestling Association has engaged Iranian coach Moazen Gholamreza for coaching the wrestlers of Punjab and he is being given $ 2000 per month as remuneration.

Among other dignitaries present on the occasion included former Vice President of the Wrestling Federation of India and former wrestler  Harpal Singh Harpura, Senior Vice President of the Punjab Wrestling Association Amarpal Singh, Treasurer  Gurmit Singh,   Rakesh Minhas and   Rajinder Singh Badheri.
