Legal luminary delivers expert talk at RBU

MOHALI: Own marriage as a social responsibility to strengthen marital and familial ties, counseled Dr Viney Kapoor Mehra, Vice-Chancellor, Dr BR Ambedkar National Law University, Sonepat while addressing students of the University School of Law at Rayat Bahra University.

Delivering a special lecture on “Changing Dimensions of Marriage and Divorce in India” Dr Mehra expressed concern over the growing loss of social solidarity in wake of loosening of family ties. She underlined the need to adopt a collective oriented, duty conscious and balanced approach to secure the institution of family and marriage from within.

She said that with there has been a change in the concept of marriage with the changing times. The traditional concept of marriage has changed and these days there is a discernible change in our society from arranged marriages to love marriages and now to live-in-relationships. She said that despite all this marriage is still largely perceived to be an immoral relationship in our society.

Dr Jasdeep Kaur, Associate Professor in Law, University Institute of Legal Studies, University School of Law, welcomed the dignitaries.

Dr Daljit Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Rayat Bahra University, accorded a warm welcome to Dr Mehra. In his welcome address, Dr Singh highlighted that organizing a series of special lectures by distinguished legal luminaries and experienced academicians at the University School of Law was an endeavour in the direction of realization of his vision of transforming the University School of Law into a ‘Centre of Academic Excellence’.

Sahila Bahra, Vice-President, Rayat Bahra Group of Institutes presided over the function.

The academic activity took place under the coordination of Dr Sonia Grewal Mahal, Head of the Department, University School of Law, Rayat Bahra University. Dr Kirat Grewal, Associate Professor in History, proposed a vote of thanks.
