Detailed project report for setting up sugercane research institute at kalanaur to be prepared within a week: Sukhjinder singh randhawa

CHANDIGARH:The detailed project report in respect of setting up of Sugarcane Research Institute at Kalanaur (Gurdaspur) would be prepared within a week.” This was disclosed here today by the Cooperation & Jails Minister Punjab, S. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa while presiding over a meeting held in the Markfed office.

Disclosing more, the minister said that the meeting has been convened to finalize the road map for setting up of dedicated Sugarcane Research Institute at Kalanaur (Gurdaspur). He further divulged that the proposal to set up a dedicated Sugarcane Research Institute has been mooted by the Department of Cooperation in order to increase the productivity, per acre yield and sugar recovery in the sugarcane crop so as to benefit the sugarcane farmers as well as sugar mills in the State. The sugarcane growers would be provided training at the Institute in respect of latest sugarcane cultivation techniques as well as research would be conducted to develop good quality new varieties of sugarcane. The minister also added that he has held a meeting with Union Agriculture Minister Mr. Narendra Tomar at New Delhi on 27th November, 2019 who has assured assistance for setting up of Sugarcane Research Institute at Kalanaur through ICAR, New Delhi.

The meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary Cooperation Mrs. Kalpana Mittal Baruah, Registrar, Cooperative Societies Punjab Mr. Vikas Garg, Vice Chancellor, PAU Ludhiana Dr. Baldev Singh Dhillon,   Managing Director Sugarfed Punjab Puneet Goyal, and Dr. S.S. Chahal Former Vice Chancellor Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur (Rajasthan).
