Nokia 8.1 review: A perfectly imperfect device

January 11, 2020 06:13 PM

Nokia 8.1 is the recent addition to the HMD Global's Nokia branded smartphone series. The device was launched initially in China and it is the successor of Nokia 7.1. Nokia has been sticking to one of finest strategies any smartphone company is using i.e providing stock Android with Android One for smooth and clean experience and regular security updates. The company has launched back to back many phones in 2018 and the year has ended with Nokia 8.1.

The smartphone is priced at Rs 26, 999 for the Indian market and comes in only one variant with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. The device gives a tight competition to companies like Xiaomi and Asus with its premium looks, build quality and features.

Design

The Nokia 8.1 looks premium with its dual-tone anodized metal frame and 2.5D glass design. Like every time, Nokia gives no chance to its customers to complain when it comes to building quality and design. The only problem on the face is the large iPhone X like notch which might look vexatious to some users. Also, the device can catch fingerprint and smudge easily due to the back glass. To overcome it, you can use the back cover though.

The device packs a 6.18-inch PureDisplay IPS LCD panel with a full-HD+ resolution of 2246×1080 pixels and a notch similar to iPhone X. When compared to its predecessor Nokia 7.1, Nokia 8.1 is a little broader and is perfectly designed. Find it best rates with Amazon Coupons via IndiaShoppers.in.

RAM and storage

Under the hood, the Nokia 8.1 packs the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC coupled with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. So finally, Nokia has crossed the threshold of Snapdragon 660 at this pricing. The device perfectly fine with the current Android OS with no complains to register or so.

In terms of gaming, Nokia 8.1 provides a smooth experience while playing high-end games like PUBG Mobile. The only problem is that it might heat up a little after long gameplay. Though it is not something that will kill your mood to play, but if there was a better cooling system it might come up nicer.

Camera

Coming to the rear camera setup, the device gets a dual vertical setup tuned by ZEISS which includes a 12-megapixel f/1.8 aperture sensor of 1.4-micron pixels coupled with a 13-megapixel secondary sensor. The rear camera also supports 4K video recording. The back camera performs exceptionally well whether the shot is taken in daylight or in low-light conditions.

For the selfie shooting, Nokia 8.1 offers a 20-megapixel f/2.0 camera. On one hand, where the rear camera impressed us fully, the front side setup doesn't reach those heights. Although it is pretty fine in this range, but users expect a lot more.Get with results updates with us by subscribing us free of cost.

Battery and other features

Nokia 8.1 packs a massive battery of 3, 500mAH with a USB Type-C port for charging. You also get an 18W fast charging adapter in the box which means it supports fast charging. The phone can get charge up to 60% in an hour and hit the century mark in two hours of time. Honestly, the battery will last you a day if you are not doing any heavy working on the device but if you are a gamer and tend to play games most of the time on the device, the battery drains rapid fast. This might disappoint you.

The smartphone supports two 4G sim cards both Nano-SIM cards or one SIM and one microSD card up toGB extendable memory.
Nokia 8.1 runs Android 9 Pie out of the box and is an Android One smartphone. So, you will get stock Android experiences and also you will get security patch and updates time to time.

Conclusion

Nokia 8.1 is a great device which has an upper-hand for sure in terms of app management, software and Android One powering. Also, if you are looking for trustable brand, premium build quality and design over latest tech, Nokia 8.1 is the perfect choice for you.
