Punjab first state to extend Universal Health Insurance in the Country: Cheema

CHANDIGARH: Paying Rich tribute to the former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi, Punjab Government launched Sarbat Sehat Bima Yojana in the State of Punjab, covering more than 85 per cent of the population.

In a special programme in SAS Nagar Mohali by Captain Amarinder Singh, Chief Minister of Punjab, launched the scheme by distributing first 10 beneficiaries cards simultaneously at 22 District Headquarters, Ministers of Punjab Government release the cards to the beneficiaries turning it one of the finest Medical Insurance Cover to the masses, where almost 46 lakhs families are to be covered for 5 lakh rupees cashless Medical Cover.

Amardeep Singh Cheema, Chairman Punjab Health Systems Corporation termed it a path breaking scheme, which is one of its kind in the country where Universal coverage is given to citizen, whereas  Government of India scheme was only covering the SECC (Socio Economic Cast Census)  Data beneficiaries, which is around 14 lakhs  families in Punjab, but Government of Punjab under the dynamic leadership of Captain Amarinder Singh extended this cover to more than 46 Lakh families as beneficiaries in all empaneled Public and private hospitals. This was in accordance with the announcement made during the Congress Election manifesto promising “health for all”.

Cheema said Government of Punjab is committed to the welfare of the residents, with free Blood Testing, Dialysis facilities, blood transfusion etc. almost all facilities are free of cost in the Government run Civil Hospitals, which really take care of the daily expenditure of a common man, where major part of expances of out of pocket are used only for medical services.

Cheema said down the line this will set a benchmark for other States to follow with maximum coverage to the masses , In this scheme scheme more than 330 Crores Rupees are being spent by the State of Punjab.
