Team finds fruits unfit for human consumption during checking

JALANDHAR:Tightening noose on the fruits and vegetable  sellers in Madhi  In a special drive against fruits and vegetables unfit for human consumption under ‘Tandarust Punjab’ Mission, a team of district administration destroyed around 60-kg papaya and 20-kg pears in the local wholesale fruit and vegetable market.

The special team headed by Deputy Director Horticulture Dr Bhawan Singh and District Mandi Officer (DMO) Varinder Khera and others started the inspection of the wholesale fruit and vegetable market at Maqsudan in the morning. The team checked the crates and boxes apple, bananas, papaya and pears during a visit to various shops.

The team found 60-kg papaya and 20-kg pears unfit for human consumption during the visit to a ripening chamber and acting swiftly, the team immediately destroyed the fruits and warned the traders that such sort of callousness on their part would not be tolerated at any cost. The team also inspected other ripening chambers in the market and found the banana kept there, satisfactory.

 They said that the sale of unhygienic fruits and vegetables which is unfit for human consumption would not be allowed at any cost.

They further asserted that this drive would be continued and stern action would be taken against the traders if they indulge in the malpractice of ripening the fruits artificially by using chemicals.
